9.7143: Nine Princes in Amber (based on 7 ratings)
- Like any book it has its flaws, but this first book in the famous Chronicles of Amber is by far my single most favourite book of anything I have ever read (and believe me, I read a lot!). I was hooked from the moment the tough Chandler-esque character woke up in a hospital bed wondering 'where am I...no wait, who the heck am I?' and proceeded through a series of adventures that unexpectedly led to castles and unicorns and fabulous adventures, wisecracking and punning all the way.
- The first book I ever read by Zelazny and my favorite. Yes there are a bunch of problems with the novel and series itself, but once I start reading this one I can't put it down. The others in the first series follow almost immedatiately.
- Opening the great Amber series, this book has been given to many of my friends who NEVER read for pleasure, and they've gone on to read and enjoy the entire series...
9.6667: Lord of Light (based on 9 ratings)
- Rightfully considered a classic SF work.
- Funny, smart, irreverent, a stand-alone classic fantasy novel that is a MUST READ for anyone who likes fantasy and science fiction.
- A coldly objective analysis of "Lord of Light" might suggest that there are problems with the structure of the narrative, which is involuted and episodic and tends to mistime its climaxes relative to the shape of the novel as a whole, but this is still a wonderful book, a splendidly colourful work of science fantasy in which evocative myth and deeply cynical science fiction run side by side, intermingled and intertwined in what is probably Zelazny's best and most effective long work. What appears at first to be a baroque fantasy set in the world of the Hindu deities turns out to be a dystopian musing on the corrupting potential of technology and power. Like so many of Zelazny's tales, long and short, this is the story of an outsider fighting against the system. And like so many of Zelazny's heroes, this outsider is a former insider, ousted by his fellows and motivated by a problematic mixture of a zeal for justice and a thirst for revenge. Great fun, and full of splendid, understated details.
- One of the two novels I always recommend. Every one says it's brillant (which it is).
- A masterpiece. Every time I read this novel I am left with a sense of awe.
- This is his best work, in my opinion.
9.4000: The Guns of Avalon (based on 5 ratings)
- The Chronicles of Amber never quite lives up to the first book, but the first time I read the first five books, they were literally page-turners that I could not put down. This is book 2.
- The second book I read by Zelazny. It follows the first and I'm off on my favorite ride. The Amber books is like going to Space Mountain, Pirate's of the Caribbeen, and It's a Small World. Like these classic Walt Disney World rides, it's the first ones you want to be on.
9.0000: The Courts of Chaos (based on 5 ratings)
- The conclusion of the first series. In some ways the best of the series save the first.
- The Chronicles of Amber never quite lives up to the first book, but the first time I read the first five books, they were literally page-turners that I could not put down. This is book 5.
9.0000: The Hand of Oberon (based on 5 ratings)
- Continues the flow of the others. Although the ride seems to winding down, it's like a roller coaster where the final up seems to be drawing near.
- The Chronicles of Amber never quite lives up to the first book, but the first time I read the first five books, they were literally page-turners that I could not put down. This is book 4.
9.0000: Sign of the Unicorn (based on 5 ratings)
- Like a good mystery, many things get revealed only leading to more mysteries.
- The Chronicles of Amber never quite lives up to the first book, but the first time I read the first five books, they were literally page-turners that I could not put down. This is book 3.
8.7500: A Night in the Lonesome October (based on 8 ratings)
- Gotta love the first-person perspective from the viewpoint of a dog.
- I'm not sure this is for everyone, but it is classic witty and funny Zelazny. Read it and guess who the unnamed characters are. Read it in October.
- To me this was his last great work. I would probably given it a higher rating, but i don't think it suited for the non-genre fans. Also, some knowledge of history is required to make the book more insightful.
- I've had friends who never read sci-fi announce to me that they've read this book and enjoyed it.
8.6667: Doorways in the Sand (based on 6 ratings)
- My personal favorite book, always a highly enjoyable read every time I revisit it.
- Funny, witty adventure with a very memorable lead character.
- This is a great book to give to a younger reader. It introduces Roger's great style, writing from a first-person point of view...
- The almost perfect college story.
8.6667: Isle of the Dead (based on 6 ratings)
- One of my all-time favourite Zelazny novels. If you like This Immortal, you should like Isle of the Dead.
- I loved this book. I don't know why it doesn't get more attention. If you've lost a lot of friends and family in your time, you've probably had fantasies about one day running into the dead from your past.
- Shimbo of Darktree, Shrugger of Thunders. Need I say more.
8.5000: Trumps of Doom (based on 6 ratings)
- This opens the second Amber series. Several people have read the first years ago and never got around to the second. While the two are always compared to each other, I would certainly suggest the second is a great read...
- The Second series. Some don't like it. I do. I like the different view point.
- The second Chronicles of Amber are not as well done as the first. They are also more sloppily written, leading to loose ends and contradictions galore. If you loved the first Chronicles, you'll enjoy the second and should not miss them. But be prepared to not enjoy them as much as the first. And to be wishing the whole time that Corwin was back (the scenes in Corwin's room in a later book, where Merlin thinks he might have just been there, gave me shivers...) This is book 1 of the second set, or book 6 overall.
8.3333: This Immortal (based on 6 ratings)
- Zelazny does many variations on tough-guy characters with extraordinary powers, and this one is probably his best, deservedly winning a Hugo for it. I've read it ten times and I'm still not done re-reading it.
- Another great short novel. I usually treasure this one once
every couple of years (don't know why). I usually accompany this book with The Dream Master.
- A great small novel. This one is close to what i consider "standard science fiction." So, i would suggest this to someone who likes sci-fi but isn't open to a lot of fantasy...
8.2000: Blood of Amber (based on 5 ratings)
- The second Chronicles of Amber are not as well done as the first. They are also more sloppily written, leading to loose ends and contradictions galore. If you loved the first Chronicles, you'll enjoy the second and should not miss them. But be prepared to not enjoy them as much as the first. And to be wishing the whole time that Corwin was back (the scenes in Corwin's room in a later book, where Merlin thinks he might have just been there, gave me shivers...) This is book 2 of the second set, or book 7 overall.
- I was in love with a girl named Amber at the time this came out. I have fonder memories of the book, than the girl.
8.0000: Jack of Shadows (based on 7 ratings)
- I was torn as to whether to give "Jack of Shadows" an 8 or a 9. Really, it stands in the penumbra between the two grades. There is some wonderful invention in this book, and as intense a portrait of the victimised outsider battling away for justice and revenge as you will find anywhere in Zelazny's work. There is some great myth-making too, and a splendid thematic use of the imagery of light and darkness. Unfortunately, the plot is highly episodic and while the contrast between the worlds of night and day in the first two sections of the book is beautifully realised, the third section of the novel takes the story off in another direction altogether with all too few links with what has gone before. Still, the book's central idea of shadow as a third realm between the dualist extremes of light and darkness is a wonderful conceit and the perfect metaphor for the characteristics of the archetypal Zelazny protagonist who is both flawed hero and virtuous villain. OK, I'll plump for a 9. This is a flawed masterpiece.
- To me, a kind of not-quite success for Zelazny, a novel that seems a bit fragmented. I loved the first third. The other two thirds were a bit disconnected from what came before. The conflict between the scientific world and the magical world is far better done here than when it was readdressed by Zelazny in the Pol novels (The Changeling and Madwand).
8.0000: Prince of Chaos (based on 5 ratings)
- The conclusion of the Amber series. Lots of questions go unanswered. Sort of like life. The only problem, I have is the quicky ending. Otherwise, a nice conclusion to the second series.
- The second Chronicles of Amber are not as well done as the first. They are also more sloppily written, leading to loose ends and contradictions galore. If you loved the first Chronicles, you'll enjoy the second and should not miss them. But be prepared to not enjoy them as much as the first. And to be wishing the whole time that Corwin was back (the scenes in Corwin's room in a later book, where Merlin thinks he might have just been there, gave me shivers...) This is book 5 of the second set, or book 10 overall.
8.0000: Sign of Chaos (based on 5 ratings)
- The second Chronicles of Amber are not as well done as the first. They are also more sloppily written, leading to loose ends and contradictions galore. If you loved the first Chronicles, you'll enjoy the second and should not miss them. But be prepared to not enjoy them as much as the first. And to be wishing the whole time that Corwin was back (the scenes in Corwin's room in a later book, where Merlin thinks he might have just been there, gave me shivers...) This is book 3 of the second set, or book 8 overall.
7.8000: Knight of Shadows (based on 5 ratings)
- The second Chronicles of Amber are not as well done as the first. They are also more sloppily written, leading to loose ends and contradictions galore. If you loved the first Chronicles, you'll enjoy the second and should not miss them. But be prepared to not enjoy them as much as the first. 7.6667: Roadmarks (based on 6 ratings)
- Highly recommended for anyone who likes science fiction and fantasy. Time travel with a different twist, a road that cuts across time and space.
7.3333: Creatures of Light and Darkness (based on 6 ratings)
- Very weird, experimental structure, but it works well.
- One of those love-hate things, where some people will love it and some will hate it. I enjoyed it, but found it difficult to follow at times. Almost like Philip Dick meets Zelazny.
- I like Creatures. Maybe I could have loved Creatures, but I always compare it to Lord of Light, since I almost always read it after it.
- This is a wild one. You need to be a Zelazny die-hard or a poet to follow this one...
7.3333: Dilvish, the Damned (based on 6 ratings)
- This straight fantasy collection of short stories about Dilvish is a good opener to any Tolkien fans...
- This and The Changing Land make up a complete story. Not Zelazny at his best, but there are memorable moments.
7.3333: Eye of Cat (based on 6 ratings)
- Some of this book seems unfinished to me, like the characters that gather together to help in the search. Time is spent establishing them, then we don't hear from the again until a brief interlude later. The chase is over a lot faster than expected. But still, the Indian mythology, the interactions between the main character and the alien he is chasing and chased by, lead to a memorable story that I have read three or four times already.
- Was never big on American Indian mythology. Still not. But, it's a nice read.
7.1429: Here There Be Dragons (based on 7 ratings)
- Very enjoyable children's story (packaged with Way up High). I loved being able to introduce my children to Zelazny in this way, and THEY loved it.
7.0000: The Changing Land (based on 4 ratings)
- I liked Dilvish. Not as much as Nemo or Jack or Corwin or Merlin, but I still like him.
- This and Dilvish, the Damned make up a complete story. Not Zelazny at his best, but there are memorable moments.
7.0000: Psychoshop (based on 4 ratings)
- A Zelazny collaboration with the dead Alfred Bester that works very well...I approached this expecting not to like it, but enjoyed it very much and have read it several times already.
7.0000: Today We Choose Faces (based on 5 ratings)
- Interesting concept, but not quite Zelazny at his best.
- Great start. Slow in the middle.
7.0000: Wilderness (based on 3 ratings)
- One of the few Zelazny collaborations that worked very well. Is it historical fiction? Fantasy? Any case, definitely worth reading.
6.7500: Damnation Alley (based on 8 ratings)
- I read this when it first came out and thought it pretty feeble stuff. That was, what, 30 or 35 years ago? Over the years since then I've reread it many times, in both the novelette and novel versions, and now think that it's a masterpiece. A post-holocaust reworking of "The Wages of Fear", it's Zelazny's best treatment of the theme of the wilful hero, tackling an impossible mission not out of the goodness of his heart (though, as always with Zelanzny, this remains a sentimental if buried possibility), but simply because he has decided to do it. The quest to take a fever serum across the irradiated badlands of a devastated continental USA becomes a purgatorial trial that gradually strips away every layer of assistance and protection from the hero till nothing is left but his naked willpower to complete the task. Assaulted variously by the enraged elements, malicious and mutated monsters, and fiercely ferral humans, the hero has to watch his companions die, his munitions run out and the various hi-tech gee-gaws he was given fail, but even when he is finally forced to leave the protective shell of his armoured vehicle he still continues on by bike, defenceless but determined. It's an astonishing performance by Zelazny, transforming material that even at the time was the raw material of post-nuclear cliche into a rattling good yarn and a stirring existentialist fable.
- The novella is better than the novel, and both are far, far better than the movie. Don't watch the movie, it's not worth it. As for the book: a different tough-guy Zelazny character in a bizarre post-nuclear holocaust wortld. Highly recommended.
- Not much by way of character development. Pretty straight-forward action novel, which was better off as the tighter novella than the expanded novel.
- Well, i didn't like the short. I hated the movie. I barely like the book.
6.4286: The Dream Master (based on 7 ratings)
- The original short story is far better than this novel (err, stretched novella). But the concept of the flawed psychiatrist/psychologist entering people's minds to do psychotherapy is haunting and extremely well executed. (If you read this after the Jennifer Lopez and Dennis Quaid rip-offs you'll wonder what the fuss is about, but The Dream Master came ages before!)
- Haunting.
6.4000: To Die in Italbar (based on 5 ratings)
- Not as good as Isle of the Dead. But an interesting read. Lots of different viewpoints.
- Not Zelazny at his best, but still enjoyable.
6.4000: Lord Demon (based on 5 ratings)
- Another Zelazny collaboration, Lindskold finishing a book he had started. Just how much had he done? I wanted to hate it, but found I actually enjoyed it. And I've even re-read it and enjoyed it still.
- I was surprised that I liked this book. Starts great but the finish is a bit of a disappointment.
6.2000: A Dark Traveling (based on 5 ratings)
- A nice short novel. I always wished he wrote more of this series (along with the Nemo books). Has almost all of what I consider the Zelanzy trademarks (nice pacing, first person narrative, some sort of mythology).
- Very enjoyable, "light" Zelazny. Written for a young adult target audience, and best suited as such, but still a fun read for any Zelazny fan.
- Decent children's book. For the adult, a bit limp.
6.2000: Donnerjack (based on 5 ratings)
- This was originally supposed to be a trilogy, but got compressed to a single long novel when it was apparent that Zelazny was dying and Lindskold would write the bulk of it. Love it or hate it, I found I enjoyed it...but there were moments when I raged that a certain character had been killed so abruptly and wondered who was responsible. Maybe it would have worked better as three books and not one. Zelazny and Lindskold borrow concepts from William Gibson and other Cyberpunks, and in several ways outdo the concept of The Matrix as depicted in the movies.
6.0000: Bridge of Ashes (based on 5 ratings)
- Average for Zelazny, may not appeal to everyone/
- Another book I never liked. It had slow pacing and never seemed to find it's own voice. The premise is pretty cool, but it's execution seemed to be lacking.
6.0000: Changeling (based on 6 ratings)
- Great fantasy. Originally this was a story that roger had intended to be used as an animated movie, so it's very visual. Published with it
s second book "Madwand" as "WizardWorld," this is proabably a good place for D&D type gamers to be introduced to Zelazny...
- For me, a kind of juvenile Zelazny, not up to his usual standards for fantasy.
6.0000: Coils (based on 5 ratings)
- A decent, enjoyable collaboration with fair illustrations.
- I always think it's a Bourne Idenitity knock off everytime I read the blurbs on the back of the book. Hmm A what if Ludlum would write sf/fantasy.
6.0000: The Mask of Loki (based on 5 ratings)
- Co-written with Thomas T. Thomas. I liked this book. Others don't. Seemed to me to have the feel of A Dark Travelling and Today We choose faces.
- Ack.
5.8000: Madwand (based on 5 ratings)
- Better than The Changeling which precedes it; a more mature character of Pol battles demons and his own inner flaws. Not as juvenile as the first book. I had hopes for the third book that was to complete the trilogy, but Zelazny never got around to writing it.
5.6667: Way Up High (based on 3 ratings)
- Very enjoyable children's story (packaged with Here There Be Dragons). I loved being able to introduce my children to Zelazny in this way, and THEY loved it.
5.2000: Deus Irae (based on 5 ratings)
- A strange collaboration, maybe a failed collaboration. I don't know of any Dick or Zelazny fans who have been wholly satisfied with it. It has its moments, but it's just really incoherent and weird.
- Only for the truely hardcore Zelazny fans. One of those books which I haven't read multiple times.
4.6000: Bring Me the Head of Prince Charming (based on 5 ratings)
- Funny and not funny, light and unsatisfying. Probably more Sheckley in this than Zelazny.
- The first in a series co-written with Robert Sheckley. In some ways, it should have been the last. Seemed to be more written by Sheckley than Zelazny.
4.4000: If At Faust You Don't Succeed (based on 5 ratings)
- Another sequel to Bring Me The Head. Why? What was the point? It's like asking why Jaws 3-D?
- The second in a series co-written with Robert Sheckley. I didn't really like the premise, but it had some good puns.
4.2500: The Black Throne (based on 4 ratings)
- Some people are Poe fans. Some just like Poe. The two authors are in the former and I'm in the latter.
- After the decent collaboration with Coils, I don't know what happened with this dreadful offering or who to blame. Three times and I still haven't been able to read the whole damned thing.
4.2500: A Farce to Be Reckoned With (based on 4 ratings)
- Sequel to Bring Me The Head...but why?
- The third in a series co-written with Robert Sheckley. I couldn't get into this book for a long time. Maybe the previous books colored be wrong with this book, but I just couldn't stomach it any longer.
2.2500: Flare (based on 4 ratings)
- drek. pure and simple
- Ick.
